Effect of WB-EMS and / or protein supplementation on obesity and cardiometabolic risk in older men with sarcopenic obesity.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of electromimulation of the whole body (WB-EMS), a highly customizable and highly customizable exercise technology for joints, obesity parameters and cardiometabolic risk in men with sarcopenic obesity.
One hundred men of ≥70 years with sarcopenic obesity were randomized into three groups: group with protein supplementation, group with WB-EMS and protein supplementation and control group. Protein supplementation contributed to an intake of 1.7-1.8 g / kg / body mass / day, the WB-EMS group consisted of 1.5 x 20 min / week (85 Hz, 350 μs, duty cycle: 4 sg / 4sg) ) with moderate High intensity.
The main endpoint of the study was the measurement of total body fat mass, and secondary endpoints were the measurement of trunk fat mass, waist circumference and total cholesterol measurement.
After 16 weeks of intervention, total body fat was significantly reduced in the protein supplementation group and in the WB-EMS group with protein supplementation, but there were no changes in the control group. Fat mass of the trunk decreased in the WB-EMS group with protein supplementation and in the protein supplementation group and increased in the control group. The circumference of the waist and total cholesterol decreased significantly in the treatment groups and remained in the control group.
Analyzing the results, we can say that whey protein supplementation in moderate-high doses, especially when combined with WB-EMS, may be a viable option to address obesity and cardiometabolic risk in elderly men with sarcopenic obesity. or unmotivated to exercise conventionally.
